比如1931年11月，中国工农红军第四方面军成立，徐向前担任总指挥兼红四军军长，成为国共两军方面军战区中最年轻的一级指挥员。彼时，蒋介石调集兵力，发动第三次“围剿”。徐向前鉴于敌军尚未部署就绪，一反过去“诱敌深入”的战法，采取先机制敌，半年之内连续发起黄安战役、商潢战役、苏家埠战役、潢光战役，歼敌正规军近40个团，红军发展到四万余人。

出任会长后，徐向前为黄埔军校同学会的题词“黄埔同学，精诚团结，实现祖国统一，建设强大祖国”，并在《人民日报》上发表谈话，提出“天下黄埔是一家”的口号。在谈话中，他语重心长地对在台黄埔同学说，“我们袍泽情深、桑梓谊重、骨肉团圆，不论先期后期，不论大陆台湾，我们都是同学。”这篇谈话在台湾、港澳地区和海外激起热烈反响。在其感召下，许多台湾和海外的黄埔同学都成为“和平统一、一国两制”的积极支持者。
